How can I get people to test a new product and give useful feedback?

Recruit people with the right problem, give them a realistic task and turn observations into a short list of product improvements.

Recruit people who might use the product, give them a task they recognize and watch where the experience breaks down. Useful testing is about understanding behavior; asking whether someone likes the idea often produces polite answers you cannot act on.

Separate recruitment from the test

Your invitation should explain who the product is for, how long participation should take, whether a prototype is involved and what information you will record. If you offer an incentive, state it clearly and do not make it conditional on praise or a favorable public review.

Look in relevant communities, customer networks, specialist associations or research recruitment services. Ask screening questions about the task people already perform, not whether they are excited about your idea. Friends can help find obvious problems, but they may know too much about your intentions.

Use a task with an observable finish

For a store prototype, ask a participant to find an appropriate item and understand delivery costs. Avoid “click this button, then that one,” which tests obedience rather than usability. Let them explain what they expect; ask permission before recording and collect only what you need.

  • Observation: the participant could not find the delivery information.
  • Interpretation to test: its location may be unclear.
  • Next change: make the information visible earlier, then test again.

Keep observations separate from your interpretation. Several people requesting the same feature may actually be struggling with a different underlying problem. Prioritize obstacles to completing the main task before adding a long feature list.

Participation beyond a test session

Onbely Verse is developing business participation opportunities around its future digital world. Its present citizen missions should not be described as an on-demand product research service for businesses. If you need tests this week, organize those independently; explore a future establishment for an ongoing presence.

Explore that business presence. What surprised you most when someone used your product without your help?
